Tritons take two at home

The 17th-ranked Iowa Central baseball team took a pair of games from Southwestern at Ed Barbour Field here Saturday.

Scores were 10-2 and 8-1 in favor of the Tritons (20-9 overall, 7-3 in the ICCAC).

Head coach Rick Pederson’s squad drew 22 walks and stole eight bases in the sweep of the Spartans (3-16, 1-9). Iowa Central’s pitching, meanwhile, surrendered only a single earned run in the doubleheader with 15 strikeouts.

”It’s always very important to take care of business here,” Pederson said. ”Our goal is to be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, and to do that, you can’t afford any missteps on your home field.”

Damian Rutherford had four hits in the opener, while Noah Pickard drove in three. Andy DeJesus, Jason Galeano and Rutherford scored three times each.

Alex Hayden (6-1) fired a complete-game three-hitter, walking two and striking out seven.

”Alex was exceptional again,” Pederson said. ”He’s had three straight dominant conference starts. He’s been our most reliable starter, and that’s what we need more of – consistent starting pitching.”

DeJesus drove in two runs in game two, while DeJesus and Tanner Buenting each recorded two hits. Buenting and Michael Kinning scored twice.

Ryan Boelter (4-1) worked five shutout innings, walking four and fanning eight.

The Tritons are back at home on Sunday, taking on Southwestern again at 1 p.m.
