Event celebrates local black history
A 50-year recognition of “Bringing Black History Alive in Fort Dodge, Iowa” is at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, 28 N. 10th St. The event is hosted by the Fort Dodge Community Choir, which will be among several musical groups performing at the event.
Local historian Charlene Washington will be recognized for five decades of work promoting and compiling history of the black community in Fort Dodge. Washington is the author of “Black History of Fort Dodge: Moving On from the Past, Focusing on the Future,” which is available at the Fort Dodge Public Library.
The book features stories of achievements by African-Americans, primarily in the Fort Dodge area. It was first released in 1999, and then updated in 2000 and 2003.
Washington said she brought a passion for black history with her when she moved to Fort Dodge from Mississippi in 1964.
“I would like to see more parents and children get involved in the future to learn more about where we came from and where we would like to go,” she said.
