Triton baseball squad splits
EL RENO, Okla. – The Iowa Central baseball team split a pair of games against Redlands Saturday afternoon.
After dropping a 7-5 decision in the opener, the Tritons (9-6 overall) rebounded with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.
Tanner Buenting, Andy DeJesus, Damian Rutherford and Christian Montero all went 2-for-4 in the first contest for Iowa Central. Buenting and DeJesus each scored twice, while Rutherford and Montero both knocked in a pair.
Starting pitcher Abrahan Flete took the loss, allowing five hits and six earned runs – with six walks and four strikeouts – over 4 1/3 innings of work.
“We gave up five runs in the bottom of the first, but we still had a shot to win it,” said ICCC head coach Rick Pederson. “It was just disappointing to fall into such a big hole. We didn’t pitch exceptionally well.”
In Game 2, the Tritons received two hits apiece from Buenting and DeJesus. Buenting and Smith also crossed the dish twice. Smith, a No. 9 batter, added a longball.
Ryan Boelter posted the win on the mound, yielding just two hits and two runs over six innings. Boelter walked one and fanned seven. Fort Dodge Senior High graduate and Iowa Hawkeye recruit Luke Vandermaten registered the last three outs for his sixth save of the year.
“We responded well in the second game,” Pederson said. “We got a great start from Boelter, who took a no-hitter into the sixth.”
Iowa Central returns to action today, facing Rose State in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Midwest City, Okla.
