Jean Gilbert, 84, of Fort Dodge passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday February 25, 2014 at the Crestview Nursing Home in Webster City, IA. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday February 28, 2014 at Epworth United Methodist Church with Pastor Erling Shultz officiating. Burial will follow at North Lawn Cemetery. The visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Jean was born in Fort Dodge on November 1, 1929 to George and Pearl (Hair) Fowler. She grew up and attended school in Fort Dodge. She was united in marriage to Richard B. Gilbert on February 20, 1944. She was a long time 68 year member of Epworth United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees and the Administrative Board and also served as Treasurer. She worked at Sears for 13 years. She was a wonderful homemaker and an amazing cook. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, quilting, sewing and playing cards. She loved her card clubs and enjoyed the game of 500. She had an open door policy when it came to anyone who wanted a cup of coffee. From 1950 until 2010, Richard and Jean lived in the home they themselves built. She especially treasured time spent with her family.
Jean is survived by her children Larry (Paulelda) Gilbert of Fort Dodge, Ronald (Connie) Gilbert of Webster City, Pearl (Dan) Brown of Webster City, Jim (Debra) Gilbert of Fort Dodge and Gary Gilbert of Fort Dodge; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard; her parents George and Pearl; sisters Florence Finck, Laura Westlake and Rhada Carlson and her brothers LeRay Fowler and Delbert Fowler.
