Dodger boys pick up win

HUMBOLDT – The Fort Dodge boys guaranteed themselves an above .500 season, as they picked up a 74-61 victory over Humboldt on Monday night.

The Dodgers will play their regular season finale tonight as they travel to Des Moines Hoover.

Tip is set for 7:45 p.m.

Fort Dodge opens postseason play on Monday when they host Mason City in a Class 4A substate quarterfinal at 7 p.m.

The Dodgers swept Mason City in the season series.

Last night the senior trio of JC Hatcher, Zach Martinson and Blake Wilder came through for the Dodgers.

Hatcher had a game high 28 points, Martinson had 17 and Wilder reached double figures with 14.

“I thought our focus and preparation was much better coming into (Monday),” said FDSH head coach Tom Daniel. “Even though we’re guaranteed a winning year, we’re still just trying to make sure we’re moving forward for the playoffs.”

Hatcher finished 10-for-18 from the field en route to his career night. The 6-foot-1 guard also contributed four rebounds and four assists.

“JC was feeling confident and shot the ball really well,” Daniel said. “He was obviously the difference in the game, but we also had good post play. It was a steady performance. I thought we ran the court well.”

As a team, the Dodgers (11-8 overall) shot 60.9 percent (28 of 46) from the field in their second highest offensive output of the season. Fort Dodge went 12 of 18 from the free throw line.

“We still need to try and close the gap defensively, but credit our guys for staying out in front and putting up 74,” said Daniel. “Hopefully, we can go down to (Des Moines) Hoover (last night) and close (the regular season) strong.”

Jaxon Heinz paced the Wildcats (13-7) with 24 points. Austin Zylstra chipped in 13.

After a short turnaround, Fort Dodge visits the Huskies (11-7) this evening.
