Janet G. Hemmen, 84, of Fort Dodge, died Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home.

A service honoring Janet’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Memorials may be directed to Unity Point Hospice.

Janet is survived by her children, Susan (Clayton Armstrong) Smith, Livermore; Christie (Scott) Schultze, Algona; David Hemmen, Comanche, Texas; Darcy (Monte) Kaufman, Fort Dodge; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and a brother Robert (Shirleen) Fricke, Mason City. She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson Baron Von Kaufman and two sisters, Iva Smock and Carol Bohen.

Janet Gertrude Hemmen, the daughter of Harry and Pearl (Wilkinson) Fricke, was born January 13, 1930, at Guttenberg. She was reared and educated at Guttenberg and received her teaching certificate at Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls. Janet taught third grade in Monona and then was a substitute teacher in Britt and Algona. She owned Jan’s Apparel in Algona for many years. Jan was also employed as a salesperson at Heartland Communications in Fort Dodge.

Janet enjoyed playing cards and having coffee with her friends. She especially treasured time spent with her family.
