Cowboys punch state ticket

ROCKWELL CITY – The No. 6 (Class 1A) Clarion-Goldfield wrestling team will be returning to state duals after claiming a regional title here Tuesday night.

The Cowboys bested Manson Northwest Webster in the semifinals before taking out 10th-ranked South Central Calhoun in the finals.

State duals go down next Wednesday from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Action in 1A is set to begin at 9 a.m.

Clarion-Goldfield, which will host this Saturday for individual bids to state next week, received pins from Lucas Lienemann, Calen Rosenbaum, Taylor Lehman and Brady Brott to start the dual.

Josh Portillo earned a technical fall, while Joel Haberman picked up a forfeit to make it 35-0 early over the Titans.

Mitch Gambrill and Justin Portillo closed the door on things with falls to complete the night.

South Central Calhoun moved into the finals with a victory over Alta/Aurelia, 66-12.

The Cowboys placed fourth at state duals a year ago, also qualifying in 2010 and ’12.
