MILL VALLEY, Calif. – Alice Irene Gulati, 69, of Mill Valley, CA, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014. She spent her last days surrounded by her husband of 41 years, Ram, her two sons, Rampi and Pavi, her daughter-in-law, Olga, and her granddaughter, Juno. She was born to June Yates and the late Glen E. Yates in West Union, IA on December 13, 1944. Irene graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1963 and received her degree in Education from Iowa State University in 1967. She married Ram Gulati in 1972 and moved to Mill Valley, CA to start their family in 1976. Irene was an accomplished elementary school teacher. First grade was her favorite.

Irene was an amazing mother. She treasured and protected her two boys. She taught them values, how to treat others, and how to love. She enjoyed simple pleasures of life: a free coffee refill to get her “money’s worth,” a disabled permit for convenient parking, a senior discount, Solitaire on her iPhone. Most of all she enjoyed the pleasure of giving her love to others. She loved showing up with a fresh batch of cookies, house guests would leave with makeshift to-go containers filled with leftovers. She loved finding the perfect card (like a laughing monkey Valentine’s card for Juno). She would visit her sons carrying an entire cheesecake (50% off since it had a decoration flaw, but it “tastes the same!”). She would gift books and new outfits for her beloved granddaughter nearly every visit because she simply “couldn’t resist.”

Irene will be remembered by all who knew and loved her for her joyful, happy, and imaginative personality, her cooking, and her generosity to all. She is survived by her mother, June Yates of Fort Dodge, IA; husband, Ram Gulati of Mill Valley, CA; her two sons, Rampi Gulati of Newport Beach, CA; and Pavi Gulati and wife, Olga and granddaughter, Juno, of Novato, CA; her sister, Mary Bowman and husband, Gary, of Aledo, TX; and nephew, Curtis Bowman of Fort Worth, TX; and brother, Chuck Yates and wife, Sally, of Des Moines, IA. She was predeceased by her father, Glen E. Yates and her nephew, Brian Bowman.

Her funeral took place February 6, 2014, in Novato, CA. Donations in Irene’s honor may be made to the Fort Dodge Public Library Children’s Department.
