Gaels top Cadets

IOWA FALLS – The St. Edmond boys basketball team recorded its second victory in as many nights Friday, edging Iowa Falls-Alden by a 49-47 final.

Seniors Konrad Laufersweiler and Robby Burke each scored 14 points for the Gaels (14-6 overall, 12-5 North Central Conference), while junior Matthew Bocken added 12.

Burke also pulled down 11 rebounds, and Laufersweiler grabbed nine boards. Junior Landon Peed dished out eight assists.

“Playing away from home in front of a good crowd, I thought we handled things real well,” said SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer. “Once our lead got down to two or three in the fourth quarter, I was happy with how our guys responded.”

The Gaels gained control early by outscoring the Cadets (6-12, 5-10) 19-7 in the first quarter. St. Edmond won the battle on the boards, 27-17.

Casey Schlatter, a Drake University signee, tallied 27 points for Iowa Falls-Alden. Quinn Taylor chipped in 10.

“I thought Landon did a real good job of guarding Casey (Schlatter entered the game as the state’s leading scorer at 33.6 points a night),” Kochendorfer said. “We really made him work for his 27.”

With the win, SEHS swept the season series from the Cadets after dropping the previous seven meetings.

The Gaels close out their regular season Tuesday at Eagle Grove.
