No injuries in bridge crash

A woman received two citations after allegedly causing a five-vehicle accident on the Kenyon Road Bridge early Friday morning.

The accident was reported at 8:04 a.m., according to Fort Dodge Police Lt. Dennis Mernka.

He said Lena Vazquez was driving west in a white Chevy Suburban. Witnesses reported that Vazquez started passing cars and changing lanes into the inside lane. Mernka said Vazquez lost control of the Suburban and crossed the median.

The Suburban hit a 2002 Ford XST, driven by Beau Winters, causing minor damage. A Ford Focus, driven by Megan Peterson, crashed into Winters’ car, causing what Mernka described as “disabling damage.”

At the same time, a Nissan XTR, driven by Shelly Hearn, tried to avoid the accident by moving to the outside lane of eastbound traffic. In doing so, Mernka said she hit a 2000 Chevy pickup, driven by Dale Pierce.

Two of the women were checked out by paramedics because they were pregnant, but Mernka said both declined to be taken to Trinity Regional Medical Center.

According to the accident report, every vehicle involved received more than $1,000 in damage, with the most severe being Peterson’s Ford with approximately $7,000 in damage. Mernka said both Peterson’s and Vazquez’s vehicles had to be towed.

Vazquez was cited with failure to maintain control and not having proof of insurance.
