Fire ravages Ampride

A fire that sent flames and smoke billowing into the sky broke out in the Ampride All-Round Travel Center, 3243 Fifth Ave. S., late Thursday night.

The fire was reported at about 10:55 p.m.

Flames erupted from the roof and windows in the back part of the building. Firefighters used a large caliber nozzle at the tip of the aerial ladder to direct a stream of water into the flames from above.

The business was apparently closed when the fire was discovered by someone passing by.

Long stretches of Fifth Avenue South and 32nd Street were closed while firefighters worked.

The Fort Dodge fire and police departments, Iowa State Patrol and paramedics from Trinity Regional Medical Center responded. Emergency personnel were still on the scene early Friday morning.
