Gael girls top Kuemper
CARROLL – The fifth-ranked (Class 2A) St. Edmond girls basketball team showed no signs of a letdown against Carroll Kuemper on Saturday night.
Extending their winning streak to seven straight games, the Gaels (17-1 overall) topped the Knights by a 67-53 final.
“We played just as well as we did (Friday in a 58-53 victory over No. 2 (3A) Clear Lake),” said SEHS head coach Scott Messerly. “This was a huge win for our girls. I was very worried going in, but we played great defense again.”
Alli Huss, a senior, paced SEHS with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
Junior Anna Yung also contributed 19 points, seven assists and six boards for the Gaels, while classmate Jaci Stumpf added 15 points, 14 assists and six rebounds.
“Jaci guarded (Kierstyn) Bauer pretty much the whole way, holding her to just one field goal (Bauer came in averaging a team-high 16.6 points a night),” Messerly said. “I thought that was probably the difference.”
As a team, St. Edmond went 23-for-42 from the free throw line. Up by four points entering the second quarter, the Gaels pulled away behind a 20-8 run.
“Kuemper started fouling with about five minutes left in the game,” said Messerly. “We got a little tired in the fourth quarter, but we went about nine deep.”
Maria Dentlinger (18) and Bauer (11) each scored in double figures for the Knights (11-7), who dropped their third straight game.
Last year, the Gaels were ousted by Kuemper in a 2A regional quarterfinal after beating them during the regular season.
St. Edmond returns to North Central Conference action on Tuesday, hosting Webster City (3-14).
