Darwin Arthur Brand, 93, of, Fort Dodge, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2014, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge.
A service honoring Darwin’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 31, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Edward Durand officiating. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery with military honors presented by V.F.W. Post No. 1856 and the Iowa Army National Guard. The visitation is 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Darwin was born in Belle Plaine, Iowa on July 29, 1920, to John and Minnie (Loeffler) Brand. He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1940. After graduation Darwin joined the Army and served his country during World War II in New Guenia and then in Japan during the occupation. After his honorable discharge Darwin returned to Fort Dodge and was united in marriage to Emma Ricke on October 6, 1946 in Fort Dodge, and they were married 55 years. Darwin worked at United States Gypsum Company for 40 years. He enjoyed many things in life, but his true love of his life was his wife Emma, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and fishing.
Darwin is survived by four sons, John (Sandi), Donald (Kay), Warren ‘Curly’ (Sharon), and Douglas, all of Fort Dodge; grandchildren Tina Pfeiffer, Nietra (B.J.) Jaquette, Aaron (Kaja) Brand, Lindsey (Andrew) Redman, Timothy (Emily) Brand, David Brand and Alex Brand; great-grandchildren, Emma Jaquette, Eero Foat, Masan, Nolan and Collin Redman; nieces and nephews; and his step-grandchildren Kay (Mike) Noah, Jason (Stephanie) and Jennifer (Nathan) Findlay and many step great-great grandchildren. Darwin is preceded in death by his parents, step mother Lydia, wife Emma in 2002, and siblings, William, Donald, Dale, Dalorise and John.
