Evon ‘Tootie’ (Kelly) Martinson, 89, of Fort Dodge, died Sunday, January 26, 2014, at The Gardens at Friendship Haven.

A service honoring Evon’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Andrea Kraushaar officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.

Evon is survived by her husband Phillip; son Craig (Roberta), Central City, Iowa; daughter Marilyn (Bret) Charon, Humboldt; grandchildren, Alicia and Adam Charon and Ingrid Martinson; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Cora (Berry) Kelly, brother Robert Kelly and two sisters, Henrietta Pliner and Marcella Morf.

Evon Kelly was born August 3, 1924, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. As a child she moved with her family to an acreage near Otho. She attended Otho School and graduated in 1942. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and received a two-year standard elementary teaching degree. In 1964, while teaching, she received a B.S. degree from Drake University. In 1974, she received an M.S. degree from Iowa State University in Ames. She taught 28 years in the Fort Dodge schools after teaching at Harcourt and Sac City, Iowa. Evon married Phillip Martinson in 1948. They lived in Fort Dodge until their retirement in 1988. They moved to a lake home near Longville, Minn., living there ten years, moving back to Fort Dodge in 1998.

Evon was a long-time member of local, state and national education associations, Alpha Delta Kappa, Webster County Branch of Iowa Retired School Personnel, GV Chapter of PEO, First United Methodist Church, Julia-Lydia Circle, Lakeside Golf Course, Friends of the Library and a charter member of Goebel Hummel Collectors Club. She was an avid reader, knitter, loved working with children and spending time with family.
