Leigh second for FDSH in CIC meet

WAUKEE – The Fort Dodge boys swim team saw the state’s elite up close and personal in the annual Central Iowa Conference meet here on Saturday.

The Dodgers placed ninth with 103 points. Johnston (370) was crowned champion, followed by West Des Moines Dowling (350) and Waukee (333). The Dragons, Maroons and Warriors are currently ranked first, second and third in the state.

”We’re 20th (in Iowa), which is pretty good, but the competition in this conference is just fierce,” FDSH head coach Joel Greathouse said. ”We’ve stayed fairly consistent with our times, but this was a work week for us.

”We’re just working on pacing ourselves and getting ready for districts on (Feb. 8).”

Junior Rob Leigh earned the best individual finish for the Dodgers, placing second in the 100-meter butterfly. Leigh recorded a time of 55.78.

Leigh was also sixth in the 200 (2:09.03).

”Two top-six finishes is a really good day for Rob,” Greathouse said. ”He did a nice job. Very exciting.”

The Dodgers’ medley relay placed seventh in 1:48.70. Team members included Caleb Asay, Nick Sanford, Josh Lee and Leigh.

Fort Dodge’s 200 (Leigh, Asay, Mitch Emery and Lee) and 400 (Emery, Cole Davis, Asay and Riley Helmers) freestyle relays were both ninth, with times of 1:34.91 and 3:40.20, respectively.

Lee was 10th in the 50 freestyle (23.30).

The Dodgers’ last dual of the season is Tuesday at Newton.
