Dodger boys come up short

AMES – The Fort Dodge boys basketball team dropped a disappointing decision to Ames here Friday night, 61-57.

Seniors Blake Wilder (15), Krunal Thakor (12), JC Hatcher (11) and Zach Martinson (10) all scored in double figures for the Dodgers (8-5 overall, 2-1 in the CIC Northern Division), who lost on the road for the first time this year.

“We had a terrible practice (Thursday), and it carried over to the court (Friday),” said FDSH head coach Tom Daniel. “Our kids battled back and had the game tied with less than three minutes left, but we had three straight trips where we turned the ball over.

“We just fell flat and didn’t deserve to win. It’s very disappointing since we had an opportunity to put a stranglehold on the conference and push our momentum to the next level.”

Fort Dodge shot 47.9 percent (23-for-48) from the field, while committing 12 turnovers. As a team, the Dodgers collected 16 assists and five steals.

“We got a nice spark from our sophomores (Sam Kolacia and Kyle Beisch), but we just need to execute better,” Daniel said. “Credit Ames for getting the job done, but we were very lethargic.”

Southern Illinois football commit Sam Straub tallied 20 points for the Little Cyclones (6-7, 2-0), while 6-foot-7 sophomore Javan White chipped in 19.

Dating back to the start of the 2011-12 campaign, Ames has now prevailed in five consecutive meetings against Fort Dodge.

With the loss, the Dodgers saw their mini two-game winning streak snapped. FDSH fell to 6-1 on the road this winter.

Looking to bounce back, Fort Dodge visits West Des Moines Valley on Tuesday.
