MANSON – Donald Hartig, 95, died peacefully at his home on Sat. Jan. 18, 2014. Funeral services will be held on Wed. Jan. 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ-Congregational in Manson, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery in Manson. Visitation will be on Tues. from 4 until 7:00 p.m. at Larson-Weishaar Funeral Home.
Donald Lyle Hartig was born on May 28, 1918, at Pocahontas, IA, the son of John and Nina Harmon Hartig. The family moved to Manson in 1922 and don graduated from Manson High School in 1936. He worked for his Dad in the trucking business until entering the U. S. Army in December of 1944, serving in France until November of 1945. On March 20, 1940, he was united in marriage with Velma Lakin in Ft. Dodge. He worked for the City of Manson in the Water Dept. for 1 1/2 years, then for the Manson Police Dept. for 20 years, retiring in 1981. He then worked for Moline Bros. hauling eggs to Minnesota until 1984, when he retired from that job and started traveling with his wife to Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, and most states in the U. S.
Don is survived by his wife of almost 72 years Velma; sons William (Carol) Hartig of Spencer, IA; Thomas (Jan) Hartig of Moreno Valley, CA; Ronald (Doris) Hartig of Manson, IA; daughter Wanda (Art) Johnson of Indianola, IA; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings Bob, Wayne, Ione, Don, Loran, Jack, Thelma, Delores, Violet, Carol, and Gilbert.
