Lara, Prescott second at CRJ

CEDAR RAPIDS – Facing an uphill climb from the start due to four open weights, the Fort Dodge wrestling team placed eighth in the J-Hawk Invitational on Saturday.

The Dodgers tallied 102.5 points. Host Cedar Rapids Jefferson (241) earned top honors, while No. 5 (2A) West Delaware (172) was second.

“It was a tough tournament with some tough weight classes,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “At times we looked good, and at other times we had no sense of urgency.”

Fourth-ranked (3A) freshman Triston Lara (106 pounds) and senior Riley Prescott (195) each claimed silver medals for the Dodgers. Lara (28-2 overall) dropped a 14-4 major decision to Jefferson’s No. 1 Brenden Baker in the finals, while Prescott (24-8) was edged in his title bout by eighth-ranked Josh Allen of the J-Hawks, 4-3.

“Triston wrestled (Baker) a lot closer than the score indicated,” Thompson said. “Every match he wrestled was against somebody who was rated.”

No. 5 Junior Erik Birnbaum (113) and sixth-ranked sophomore Sam Cook (182) were each third for Fort Dodge. Finishing sixth was sophomore Cole Detmering (120).

“I thought Birnbaum competed pretty well,” said Thompson. “The biggest thing we need to do is dial in on the fundamentals and push the pace a little. I thought we’d be a little higher than eighth, but we had (five) kids that didn’t score any points. I sure would like to get in the top-five of a big tournament.”

Next meet for the Dodgers is Thursday at Mason City. Varsity start time is set for 7:30 p.m.
