Dodger girls edge J-Hawks
URBANDALE – The Fort Dodge girls put together their best shooting performance from the three-point line here Friday night, and they needed all of it.
The Dodgers made 10 of 15 three-pointers, holding on for a 58-56 victory over Urbandale.
Lani Van Zyl scored 22 points, going 8-for-9 from the floor and hitting five of those 10 three-pointers.
“We’ve been steadily getting better (from outside),” FDSH head coach Scott Timmerman said. “We do a variety of shooting drills in practice and we’ve been seeing improvement.
“The girls compete against themselves in practice, and it’s great to see that carry over into games. It’s pretty exciting.”
Mallory Kilian and Ashley Altman scored 14 and 12, with each making two triples. Altman also grabbed 10 rebounds and helped seal the game late with four free throws.
“Urbandale took the lead with about two minutes left, but we got it back,” Timmerman said. “It was a one-or-two-point game the rest of the way, with the game ending on a mad scramble as the ball rolled to half-court and the clock expired.”
Fort Dodge (7-6 overall) led by six after the first quarter and seven at halftime. That lead was trimmed down to four entering the final eight minutes.
The J-Hawks (1-9) were paced by sophomores Kennedy Kracht and Andrea Mataloni, who scored 15 and 13.
The Dodgers are now 4-3 on the road and have won three of their last four. They return to action on Tuesday at home against No. 6 (Class 5A) Waterloo West.
