FD’s Lara wins title in Ames
AMES – Competing against a deep and talented field, the Fort Dodge wrestling team settled for eighth at the Jack Mendenhall Invitational on Saturday.
The Dodgers finished with 103 points. Top-ranked (Class 3A) Waverly-Shell Rock (209) and No. 9 (3A) Cedar Rapids Prairie (184.5) were first and second, respectively.
Clarion-Goldfield (142) placed third, while Webster City (140) was fourth and seventh-ranked (2A) Humboldt (107) was seventh.
“Eighth was about right where we thought we’d be after giving up (three) open weights,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “We just need to keep closing the gap on our opponents.”
Fourth-ranked (3A) freshman Triston Lara (106 pounds) earned the lone individual title for FDSH. Lara improved to 23-1 on the season by winning all four of his matches. Lara topped Clarion-Goldfield’s Justin Portillo in the championship round by a 4-2 decision.
“Triston finishing first in a tough weight class really stood out,” Thompson said. “There was a ranked kid from Kansas and four or five ranked kids from Iowa in his bracket. The kid he beat in the finals (Portillo) just moved in from Ohio, too.”
No. 9 Jonah Egli (152) placed third for the Dodgers, while Cole Detmering (120) and Riley Prescott (195) were each fourth. In addition, sixth-ranked Sam Cook (182) checked in sixth, and Kole Evans (126) was seventh.
Clarion-Goldfield’s Josh Portillo (113) took home gold.
No. 5 (2A) Dylan Fielder (195) and Gustavo Gasca (220) were each champions for Webster City.
Humboldt received a runner-up effort from second-ranked Reed Dreyer (195).
Next action for the Dodgers is Thursday in a triangular against North Central Conference foes Clear Lake and Iowa Falls-Alden. Action begins at 6 p.m. in Iowa Falls.
