Gael boys top Garrigan

ALGONA – Behind a strong defensive effort, the fourth-ranked (Class 2A) St. Edmond boys basketball team recorded a 49-41 victory over Bishop Garrigan in North Central Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Seniors Robby Burke (19 points and 11 rebounds) and Konrad Laufersweiler (13 and 11) each contributed double-doubles for the unbeaten Gaels (8-0 overall, 7-0 in the NCC).

“It was a good game for us against a Garrigan team that always plays us tough,” said SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer. “We knew going in (the Golden Bears) were real capable after playing Clear Lake and Humboldt close until the last minute.”

Landon Peed, a junior, also delivered eight points and nine assists for St. Edmond, which had seven different players score at least one hoop. SEHS won the battle on the boards, 28-18.

“Both teams played really hard,” Kochendorfer said. “It seems like it’s always a dogfight when we play Garrigan. It was hard for us to get anything going.”

Down by a single point at the start of the second quarter, the Gaels outscored the Golden Bears (3-5, 2-4) 39-30 the rest of the way.

Nathan Krieps tallied a game-high 24 points for Garrigan, which dropped its fourth straight contest.

Next outing for St. Edmond is Tuesday when it hosts Humboldt (7-1, 6-1). The Golden Bears visit Webster City (2-5, 2-4) that same night.
