LeRoy Frederick Guderian, 94, of Fort Dodge, passed away peacefully on Jan. 1, 2014 following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5th at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (1023 S 27th St) in Fort Dodge with Pastor Edward Durand officiating. Visitation will be from 11:30 to 1:30 at Prince of Peace Lutheran with the funeral services immediately following. Burial will be at North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge at a later date with full military honors conducted by the VFW Post #1856 and the United States Army.
LeRoy was born June 22, 1919 near Gilmore City to Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich (Frederick Henry) and Harmena Harmke (nee Krie) (Minnie) Guderian. He remained on the family farm until he entered service in the U.S. Army onJan. 28, 1942. He was sent to Camp Young near Indio, CA for training under Gen. George Patton. LeRoy was trained as a medic and was shipped to Oran, Africa, then on to Italy where he was in the medical detachment in the 351stInfantry of the 755th Tank Battalion. He served in 4 campaigns, in Naples, Foggia, Rome and Po Valley before returning home in October 1945.
He married Elinor Louisa (nee Peterson) on Oct. 28, 1945 in Gilmore City, IA and together started their family. After farming for several years he began work Hormeland worked there for 29years. LeRoy and Elinor owned and operated ‘Elinor’s Ceramics’for many years before they retired and did some traveling until Elinor’s passing. He later married Marietta Westphal and they enjoyed 8 years together.
He enjoyed going to coffee every morning at HyVee to socialize with friends and family members. His greatest treasure was his family. He was a true man of honor who knew and openly confessed his faith and belief in the resurrection of the dead and the life everlasting.
LeRoy is survived by his two daughters, Judy Guderian, of Fort Dodge and Linda Ault, of Clinton, WI;also son-in-law Richard Ault, granddaughter Cindy Linney, grandson-in-law Mark Linney, and two precious great grandchildren, Rory Elinor Linney and Deklin Mark Linney, all of Clinton, WI. Sisters, Bee Feaster and Marge Bundy, both of Fort Dodge, and brother, Harrold Guderian, Lowry, MN; 17 special nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews;also dear Step-children: Vernetta Kolesar (John) of Badger; Janet Lennon of Fort Dodge; Shirley Ballard (Chuck) of Ankeny, and Jim Westphal (Sharon) of Miami, OK; 3 step grandchildren; and 7step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers (Julius and Fritz); 3 sisters (Hazel, Anna, and Maria); his wife of 51 years, Elinor; andwife of 8 years, Marietta.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be left to the discretion of the family.
