Giving goes a long way

Fort Dodge Noon Sertoma Club President John Ueltschy announced the winners of the annual Lights at Kennedy display Thursday afternoon during the group’s weekly meeting at Godfather’s Pizza.

The first place winner is the Badger Lake Dragon Boat Association; the second place was earned by ABATE District 10, and third by Crimmins Welding and Fabrication.

Each was awarded a cash prize: $500 for first, $300 for second and $200 for third.

Doug Smith, ABATE District 10 coordinator, had an immediate response when he was handed the check by Ueltschy.

“We’re going to donate this right back to the Backpack Buddies,” he said.

The other winners did the same, each donating their winnings back to the Backpack Buddies program which provides at-need students with a backpack filled with food items for them to eat during the weekends when they’re not in school.

Ueltschy announced this year’s event totals.

“We raised $4,059 for the Backpack Buddies,” he said.

That does not include the prize money that was donated back.

He said that 1,249 cars traveled through the display which featured displays from 25 businesses and organizations.

The group also made a donation of $1,000 to Webster County Conservation for the use of the campground where the display is set up and snow removal efforts.

“They’ve always been a great partner to work with,” Ueltschy said.
