First 2014 baby born to E.G. parents
When Brittany Eittreim and Joe Merris were planning how to celebrate the New Year, they didn’t imagine it would begin with the birth of their third child.
But that’s how the Eagle Grove couple ended up spending Jan. 1. They welcomed a baby boy, Silas James Merris, into their family around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Eittreim said she had no idea their son was the first baby born at Trinity Regional Medical Center in 2014.
“They let us know when we first came in,” she said. “We’re very excited.”
According to Merris, the couple wasn’t expecting a New Year’s baby.
“She wasn’t due for another 11 days,” he said. “We were expecting him Jan. 11.”
Even though he’s a newborn, Merris said his son was already aware of his surroundings.
“He’s pretty alert,” the father said. “He’s had his eyes open a lot of the time.”
But by early afternoon, the first baby of the year was enjoying a nap.
Silas James is the couple’s third child and their first boy. He has two older sisters: Alanna, 5, and Addison, 4.
Eittreim and Merris said they are pleased to become parents for the third time.
“We’re happy to have him,” Merris said.
Silas Merris arrrived at 7:36 p.m. Wednesday. He weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long.
As the parents of 2014’s first baby, the couple received a small gift from the hospital’s birth center, as well as a formula bag, which includes a booklet that provides information on baby care.
