Flattery is mayor pro tem; roles are chosen

Members of the Fort Dodge City Council elected two of their colleagues to leadership positions and picked committee assignments during their first meeting of the year Thursday.

Councilman Dave Flattery was unanimously elected mayor pro tem. In that capacity, he will preside over council meetings in the absence of Mayor Matt Bemrich.

Councilman Don Wilson was unanimously elected to be dean of the council. He’ll preside over meetings when both Bemrich and Flattery are absent. Last year, Wilson held the positions of mayor pro tem and dean of the council.

The council members also chose the committees on which they will serve.

The new committee assignments are:

Public Safety Andy Fritz (chairman), Dean Hill and Kim Alstott

Utilities Hill (chairman), Jeffrey Halter and Alstott

Ways and Means Alstott (chairman), Terry Moehnke and Flattery

Engineering and Streets Flattery (chairman), Fritz and Wilson

Planning and Community Development Wilson (chairman), Halter and Flattery

Boards and Commissions Moehnke (chairman), Wilson and Hill

Leisure Time Halter (chairman), Moehnke and Fritz

The committees meet as needed to study issues and make recommendations to the full council.

The council took no other action during its Thursday morning meeting.
