Gael girls 7-0 at the break
JEWELL – Another dominant performance by the fifth-ranked (Class 2A) St. Edmond girls basketball team resulted in a 63-30 rout of South Hamilton Saturday night.
The unbeaten Gaels (7-0 overall) built a commanding 38-15 advantage at the break and were never seriously challenged. Due to the 35-point differential rule, the clock ran continuously for most of the fourth quarter.
“It was kind of the same game as (Friday’s 58-26 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden),” said SEHS head coach Scott Messerly. “We pressed some at the start, but then we dropped back once we got a big lead.
“We actually tried a couple of different defenses. It was nice to get a lot of kids some playing time.”
Senior Alli Huss paced the Gaels with 22 points, while junior Anna Yung contributed 16. Huss and Madeline Baldwin each grabbed 11 rebounds, and Jaci Stumpf dished out 12 assists. Brigid Hanley added five boards and three steals.
“We’re undefeated one-third of the way through the season, which is all you can ask for,” Messerly said. “I’m proud of our girls, but we know the second half will be different since we’re on the road a lot more.”
St. Edmond has now held four opponents to 30 points or less this year. All seven Gael wins have come by double digits.
For the Hawks (1-7), Kayla Monthei and Savana Stangeland scored eight points apiece.
After the holiday break, the Gaels host Eagle Grove (0-8) on Jan. 3.
