Triton men ready for action

Putting its unbeaten home record on the line, the Iowa Central men’s basketball team welcomes Div. I foe Northeast Nebraska tonight.

Tip is set for 6 p.m. inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

This past weekend, Iowa Central (9-6 overall) went 2-1 at the Highland Classic in Freeeport, Ill. After dropping an 80-75 decision to Sauk Valley, the Tritons bounced back with convincing victories over Black Hawk-East (75-58) and Midwest Elite Prep (99-61).

“We’ve been playing pretty good basketball, and we’ve made some improvement since the beginning of the season,” ICCC head coach Dennis Pilcher said. “Offensively, we’re doing a better job of finding the open man, moving and screening. We’ve also been pretty solid defensively. With the game being called close this year, we haven’t been fouling, either (ICCC has made 222 free throws compared to just 184 attempts for its opponents).”

Sophomores Dylan Travis (16.0) and Jesse Jones (13.8) each score in double figures for the Tritons, who are 3-0 on Dennis Pilcher Court this season. Travis has also delivered 55 rebounds, 33 assists and a team-high 21 steals. Jones paces Iowa Central in assists (46), while notching 36 boards and 19 steals.

Ky Kramer (9.7 points per game), Javonte Young (6.6) and Jasmin Biberovikj (8.2) round out the Triton starting five.

“We need to play transition defense and keep (the Hawks) off the boards,” said Pilcher. “Jabbar Washington is a good perimeter shooter for Northeast, so we’ve got to find him (defensively) and stay on him.”

Following five straight wins, the Hawks (10-5) suffered a 109-88 setback at Hutchinson on Friday. Washington (16.6), Khapri Alston (14.5) and Buay Tuach (14.3) anchor the balanced offensive attack for Northeast Nebraska, which averages 90.1 points per night.

In this year’s previous meeting back on Nov. 9 at the Northeast Classic, the Tritons were edged by the host Hawks, 86-81.

“We’re trying to get in double digits in wins before Christmas,” Pilcher said. “This is a big game for us against a good ballclub.”
