Weighs in on farm bill

To the editor:

They will be passing a new farm bill in the next couple weeks. Rep. Steve King, who has been backed by the factory farming industry, added an amendment to kill some of the laws we have to protect animals, workers and the environment. His amendment would allow horse slaughter plants to open all across America which would cause more overbreeding. Careless breeders rely on horse slaughter to get rid of excess horses and feed their greed. More than 92 percent of horses going to slaughter are in good condition and many have been raised as companion animals. They are condemned to this horrific end following a lifetime of service to humans.

Taxpayers would be forced to pay millions to fund a new program to slaughter horses, when more than 80 percent of Americans are strongly against horse slaughter.

If someone can’t find a home for their horse, they have the responsibility to call the Humane Society, the ASPCA or as a last resort – humane euthanasia and disposal – approximately $225 – the cost of one month’s care.

Please email or call your representatives at (202) 224-3121 and ask them to support the “Safeguard American Food Exports Act.”
