Lara wins CB title

COUNCIL BLUFFS – Freshman Tristan Lara picked up an impressive tournament title on Saturday in the Council Bluffs Classic.

The varsity newcomer won the 106-pound title in a stacked tournament, as the Dodgers finished a strong seventh.

Lara, who is ranked sixth, picked up falls over Miguel Hernandez of Grand Island and Skylar Stalcup of Norris in his first two matches.

He also earned two more falls, knocking off Nate Nebel of Glenwood and Nick Cornwall of Spirit Lake.

In the semifinals, he defeated Gabe Crocker of Kearney 11-3. In his championship match he beat Tony Heng of Nebraska City, 10-8.

“Triton wrestled a great tournament obviously,” said Fort Dodge head coach Bobby Thompson. “He beat a state placewinner from Nebraska in the finals, a tough kid from Kansas in the semis, and wrestled at a high level – very consistent.

“This experience will help him.”

Junior Erik Birnbaum came away with a second place finish. He lost to Zach Prall of Plattsmouth 5-4 in the championship at 113 pounds. He had a tech fall, fall, major decision and decision on his way to the finals.

“Erik put together a solid tournament,” Thompson said. “It was a tough three days for the kids.

“Top to bottom I thought we did well. Even our inexpereinced guys battled.”

Sam Cook (182) pounds, finished third, after advancing to the semifinals.

Riley Prescott (195) finished fifth and Jonah Egli (152) was sixth. Nic Ganzeveld (120) and Keaton Dornath (170) finished ninth and 10th respectively.

“Sam performed well placing third. He got beat by a Kansas state finalist,” Thompson said. “Prescott went 5-1 and finished fifth. He did a solid job and got better as the tournament went on.

“Not only did we get exposure and competition, but the venue itself. Ten mats in a big arena, pressure. It was good for us to see early on. This will benefit us down the road definitely.”

The Dodgers are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Algona to face the Bulldogs and Webster City. Action begins at 6 p.m.
