Gaels compete at Manson NW

MANSON – The sixth-ranked St. Edmond wrestling team will get a chance to work through some rough spots as they travel to Manson for the Doug Wood Cougar Invitational today.

Action begins at 10 a.m. inside the Manson gym.

Joining the Gaels and host Cougars will be Ogden, Ridge View, OA-BC-IG, South Hamilton, Alta Aurelia, East Sac County, West Bend-Mallard and Clarinda.

“We need to get the mat time,” said St. Edmond head coach Tanner Utley. “It will help us get some film and be able to break things down.

“This is a good tournament for us to do that at. We’ll get some matches and work off of that.”

The Gaels won the team championship last year, crowning five champions. Looking to defend their titles will be third-ranked Ryan Szalat and top-ranked Vinnie Harvey.

Third-ranked Payton Rice and Tim Butcher will look to defend for the Cougars. Also ranked for Manson is seventh-ranked Lucas Dolder (160).

The Gaels are coming off a 64-12 loss to Clear Lake on Thursday night in their season opener.

“We didn’t do a good job of battling through adversity,” Utley said. “We have to make improvement from week to week. We have a lot of things to work on and getting tournament action will help.”
