PALMER – Marvin L. Mengel – age 84, of Palmer, passed away Friday, December 6, 2013, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Pocahontas, Iowa, with Pastor Joy Gonnerman officiating.

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 AM Tuesday, Dec. 10th, at the church.

Burial will be in Summit Hill Cemetery in Pocahontas with military rites by the Palmer American Legion and AMVETS.

Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas is handling arrangements.

Marvin LeRoy Mengel was born March 7, 1929, at Paton, Iowa. He was the son of William and Nellie Mengel. Marvin attended Paton High School in Paton. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 – 1953 during the Korean War. On August 30, 1953, Marvin married Betty Lou Aden at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Pocahontas. The couple lived near Paton until 1967 when they settled on their farm east of Palmer. Betty Lou passed away in 2006 and Marvin continued to make his home on the farm.

Marvin was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church. He served on the Church Council and the Palmer Elevator Board. He was also a member of the Palmer American Legion and AMVETS. Marvin enjoyed fishing, telling jokes and gardening both flowers and vegetables. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his sister, Dorothy Lynch of Broken Bow, Nebraska; several nieces and nephews and many friends. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Lou; brother, Dean Mengel and sister, Doris Litchliter.
