Clear Lake handles Gaels
CLEAR LAKE – It was a rough opening night for the St. Edmond wrestling team here Thursday, as Clear Lake scored a 66-12 victory.
The Gaels (0-1 overall, 0-1 in North Central Conference) were without expected regulars Kaden McClintock and Jimmy Averill, putting themselves in a hole from the start.
Vinnie Harvey and Colin Birzer earned the lone victories on the night for St. Edmond. Harvey, ranked No. 1 at 220 pounds, pinned Ace Walton in a minute.
“Clear Lake is solid and we knew that going in,” SEHS head coach Tanner Utley said. “It was an uphill battle from the start, and they added to that by slapping us in the mouth.
“We have to get tougher from here on out.”
Birzer, a sophomore, picked up a forfeit at 120 for the other Gael victory.
Harvey’s win was the 121st of his career, while it marked the first official varsity victory for Birzer.
“For his first match out, Vinnie came right out and did what he needed to,” Utley said. “That was what we expected from him – to pick right up where he left off.”
St. Edmond returns to action this weekend in Manson at the Doug Wood Invitational.
