Tritons roll in home opener

For the Iowa Central men’s basketball team, Monday night’s 2013-14 home opener was never in doubt.

The Tritons (4-3 overall) hammered Simpson JV by a 101-60 final on Dennis Pilcher Court at Hodges Fieldhouse.

After an 11-3 burst to open the game, Iowa Central coasted the rest of the way. The Tritons fired 58.5 percent (38 of 65) from the field, while outrebounding the Storm, 39-24.

“Our guys have played much better the last two games, and we’re gaining more confidence as the season goes on,” said Pilcher, who earned his 768th career win Monday. “It’s still a learning process for us right now, but I think we can be a pretty good basketball team later on down the road.

“I understand that our competition will only get tougher in conference play. At the same time, I was pleased with how we executed most of our team concepts again (last evening).”

Dylan Travis, a transfer from Midland University, netted a game-high 18 points for the Tritons on 7-for-10 shooting, including four triples.

Jesse Jones (17), Jasmin Biberovikj (11) and Nhyree Mitchell (10) were Iowa Central’s other top offensive performers.

All 14 Tritons cracked the scoring column. Reserve center Luke Guenther’s hoop in the final minute pushed Iowa Central past the century mark for a second straight outing.

“We’ve been wanting to see Nhyree run the floor more, and Puot (Kudhot) attack the basket, which they did a better job of at times,” Pilcher said. “Our post guys still need to get tougher, though, along with our help-side defense. There were two or three times (Monday) where we didn’t guard dribble penetration, and (the Storm) got to the hole for easy layups.”

Cody Good delivered 17 points for the Storm (0-1), while Austin Turner added 13. As a team, Simpson JV was held to only 32.8 percent shooting (21 of 64).

Next action for Iowa Central is Wednesday when it welcomes Waldorf JV. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
