Body found at high school ID’d

ALGONA – Officials have identified the body found on Algona school district property early Friday morning.

The man was identified as Shane Lee Ballenger, 23, of Algona, according to Marty Fonley, Algona Community School District superintendent.

Ballenger died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, he said.

According to the Algona Police Department, no foul play is suspected and there are no concerns for public safety.

Fonley confirmed that Ballenger’s body was found on Algona High School grounds shortly before 1:30 a.m. Friday. He said no students, staff or teachers were involved in finding Ballenger.

An autopsy, ordered by the state medical examiner, is scheduled for today, he said.

“It is a preliminary, with the autopsy to be performed tomorrow at Mercy Medical Center.”

Classes at all Algona schools were canceled Friday so police could investigate, according to a police department press release.

Fonley said that also enabled the district to gather more accurate information about the incident.

“This morning there wasn’t much to share,” Fonley said Friday afternoon. “We want to keep parents informed and this morning we wouldn’t have been able to do that. And to assist with the police and get the information to pass along, we felt it was better not to have classes today.”

The district is helping students through the incident, Fonley said.

“We’re making sure we’re taking care of grief plans to make sure we’re prepared to help students with this,” he said. “Our thoughts go out to the family.”
