Gospel music workshop and concert set for next weekend

A Gospel music workshop will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at St. Olaf Church, 239 N. 11th St. A concert will be held at 5 p.m. Nov. 9 at the church.

The workshop will feature Minister of Music Larry Brandon from Des Moines, said organizer Sherry Washington. Brandon plays at multiple Des Moines churches every Sunday, and is in high demand for workshops and events across the country, she said.

Topics will include praise and worship, directing, and life in worship. The workshop will address a choir’s spiritual role, Washington said.

“So that the choir and churches and communities can understand what the choir’s role is in church. It’s not entertainment, it’s not for the latest song, you know, karaoke – it’s really the spiritual connection of how the spirit and the choir connects to the worship,” she said. “It opens doors when the pastors are preparing to come up and give their sermons, it gives them that spirit.”

The workshop is also a chance to build awareness of the Community Choir of Fort Dodge, which formed in June for Second Baptist Church’s Juneteenth celebration.

“When we first featured it in June, the response was overwhelming and people enjoyed it so much, we decided to continue on,” she said. “It’s because we all wanted to sing together without any denominational barriers.

“Anyone in the community is able to join in and sing with us. We don’t care if you’re Lutheran, Methodist, Church of God in Christ, Baptist, it doesn’t matter. It’s just anyone who wants to sing praises to the Lord.”

The concert is free. Registration for the workshop is $10, but Washington said no one would be turned away if they couldn’t pay.
