‘Ignorance is not bliss’

To the editor:

The article in the Business section of the Oct. 20 Messenger, regarding Monsanto’s genetically engineering of food crops is disturbing. Glorifying unnatural methods to produce a completely new species, without knowing the consequences these unnatural species may have on this planet, is at best irresponsible, and mostly insane.

When we first went to space, we were protective to try to be sure that no foreign bacteria or virus was carried back to earth. Now we allow man to produce unnatural species and call it progress.

There is not sufficient space here to explain the research which is ongoing that has indicated that these unnatural crops will have a significant affect upon the health of many species both animal and human. Mr. Fraley, as well as many others believe this practice is “normal” and necessary. Well-meaning ignorance is dangerous. Just because it can be accomplished does not make it right. Europe does not allow genetically engineered crops to be grown or even sold in their countries. We cannot allow it to happen here. Money is driving this runaway train. Ignorance is not bliss in this instance. “Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do.”
