FD volleyball squad sweeps Mohawks

MASON CITY – The Fort Dodge volleyball team is starting to find some momentum as the postseason approaches.

Fresh off a third-place finish at the Perry Invitational earlier this week, the Dodgers swept past Mason City here Thursday night.

Scores were 25-18, 25-15 and 25-15.

Ashley Altman led Fort Dodge (12-23 overall, 1-1 in CIC Northern) with 11 kills, while Lexi Astor added 10 kills and 23 digs.

Maddie Egli recorded 25 assists and Kari Grindberg had 16 digs for the Dodgers, who have won four of their last seven overall.

“We’re starting to find that momentum at the right time,” FDSH head coach Tonia Burrell said. “Tiana (Mericle) is still hurting and we are working other girls in, but I am so happy with what I saw (Thursday night).

“It was a good week for us – something we really needed to help build our confidence. Picking up a road win is always nice. I saw a lot more consistency, which is what we’ve been trying to achieve.”

Senior Hannan Hughes stepped in and had two blocks and Maci Knutson was a perfect 13-for-13 serving.

“Hanna really came in and did a nice job for us,” Burrell said. “And Lexi had a really smart night.”

Fort Dodge faces Ames on Tuesday.

The Dodgers won the junior varsity contest, 26-24, 25-18 and the sophomore match, 25-11, 25-10.

Fort Dodge’s freshman A team lost, 23-25, 25-17, 15-4, while the B won, 25-13, 25-23.
