HOUSTON – George C. Hedegard, 67, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at his home in Houston, Texas. Funeral services are currently pending in Mission, Texas, with burial at Rio Grande Valley State Veteran’s Cemetery.
George is survived by his son, Jon (Kim) Hedegard, Harlingen, TX, and his daughter, Jill Wright of Pharr, TX, six grandchildren, Justin, Rebecca, Kelly and Sarah Wright of Pharr, Tx, and Ashley and Jordan Hedegard of Harlingen, TX; sister, Caroline (Xavier) Martin, niece, Samantha Messerly, nephews Scott and Joshua Messerly, his two favorite aunts, Agnes and Uncle Patrick Hickey of Newfoundland and Viola Hodge of Austin, MN, along with numerous family and friends in Newfoundland. George was preceded in death by his parents Karl and Catherine Hedegard, and brother, Don Hedegard.
George Christen Hedegard was born June 30, 1946, in Harlan, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Fort Dodge, graduating from St. Edmond High School in 1964. He was united in marriage with Sandra LaSourd and they later divorced. George served in the U.S. Air Force serving in Viet Nam, and was honorably discharged in 1968. He returned to work at Hormels in Fort Dodge until the company closing after which he moved to Katy, TX to work for Hormels there. He married Patricia VonEhwegen and they were later divorced. George left Hormels to work for the State of Texas until his retirement in 2008. He then took a job with the State of Texas Adult Protective Services until his second retirement in 2011.
George loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, whom he was deeply proud of, and he also loved traveling each year to visit family and friends in Newfoundland.
