Algona boys win again
EAGLE GROVE – For a second straight year, the Algona boys cross country team outdistanced the rest of the field at the North Central Conference meet on Tuesday.
Behind a balanced effort, the fourth-ranked (Class 3A) Bulldogs posted just 32 points despite running in less than ideal weather conditions. Clear Lake (71) and No. 8 (2A) St. Edmond (82) both followed.
Junior Bo Hjelle, ranked 13th, took home top individual honors for Algona in a time of 16:38.86. Clear Lake’s Antonio DiMarco (17:00.35) earned silver.
“This is my first year out for cross country, and (last night) was the first time I’ve ever won a race, so (the victory) feels great,” said Hjelle, who placed fourth in the 3A 800 at the state track meet this past spring. “Our team also dominated, which was a lot of fun to be a part of.”
Rounding out the Bulldog scorecard were Peter Hollinger (4th, 17:18.53), Mason Altman (7th, 17:28.49), Loren Shellabarger (9th, 17:30.35) and Nathan Stumme (11th, 17:34.15).
“That’s a pretty special group of boys that just puts it out there every race,” AHS head coach Chad Ahlers said. “They’re not afraid to mix it up with anyone.”
Casey McEvoy (6th, 17:27.83), Jacob Hamilton (12th, 17:36.18), Harrison Mayer (18th, 18:07.89), Nate Yetmar (21st, 18:17.68) and Devin Camamo (25th, 18:28.46) were the Gael counters.
“Casey getting all-conference (for finishing in the Top 10) is a great feat and a nice way for him to go out in his last conference meet,” said SEHS head coach Mike Szalat. “As our No. 4 guy, Nate really stepped it up big time for us, too, which we’re going to need a week from Thursday (at the 2A state qualifying meet hosted by Gilbert at Iowa State). Hopefully, we can just keep improving on our times.”
Humboldt’s Jake Miller (5th, 17:25.19), Eagle Grove’s Noah Stephas (3rd, 18:03.71), Webster City’s Jacob Perin (22nd, 18:18.63), Bishop Garrigan’s Tony Kollasch (8th, 17:29.79) and Clarion-Goldfield’s Michael EnTin (61st, 22:25.56) led the way for their respective schools.
