Come to the cabaret

Musical cabaret is coming back to Willow Ridge, courtesy of Iowa Central Community College.

“We decided to take our Spotlight concert that we’ve done before, and challenge our students to another level,” said Kathleen Schreier, director of choral activities.

“We have 15 or 16 students singing solos of different genres, plus the vocal jazz group is singing a couple songs.”

The college held a similar cabaret during Arts at the Ridge last year, she said.

“It was very popular,” Schreier said, “and it was great venue for out students who want to do above and beyond. It’s really challenging for the solo singer. It opens a showcase for them.”

It’s a chance for her students to perform outside of the campus setting.

“We’re trying to get our kids out into the community,” she said.

Guests will be served a four-course meal served by the Iowa Central Culinary students in a club-like atmosphere while the vocal students perform, she said.

“It’s a collaboration of vocal music department with the culinary arts students. That has proved to be a win-win for all of us,” she said. “They get to do the instruction, prepare a meal and serve it with the entertainment, and our students get to be the entertainment.”

The vocalists will be assisted by Iowa Central’s improv team, Blue Light Special, directed by sophomore Alexandra Sudbrock.

“The music department has added a new twist to the fall schedule by offering two separate music venues in October,” Schreier said.

The second venue will be a fall instrumental concert on 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at Decker Auditorium. This concert will include members of the concert band, jazz band, brass ensemble and percussion ensemble.
