WILLIAM E. SMITH
AUBURN – William E. Smith “Buckskin Bill” died at the age of 91 at Twilight Acres on Thursday, August 15, 2013. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 19, 2013 at the Lake City Cemetery. Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City is assisting the family.
Bill was born on December 7, 1921 to Hank and Katherine (Smith) Buttrick. He was a member of the Baptist Church and graduated from Lake City High School. Bill served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, where he was stationed in Hawaii. He then worked in Alaska as a lineman for G.E. for one year.
He was M.C. for the Fort Dodge Barn Dance on TV for two years where he was known as “Buckskin Bill” a name he’s still known by.
He worked at KSCG and had a half-hour radio program for 15 years. Bill moved to Yetter when he retired and was pastor of the Yetter Church for eight years.
Bill is survived by his cousins Pat Eikenberry of Auburn and Harold Puffer of California, and nephew George Halvorsen of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Margaret Ann Halvorsen and Elaine Paulson, and nephew Sam Smith.
