William McDermott, 78, of Casa Grande, Arizona, died on July 29, 2013, at Hospice Family Care.

Mr. McDermott was born on May 28, 1935, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and raised there. He served in the Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He married and raised his family in Fort Dodge, working at Hormel Foods Corporation and later Amman Farms.

He retired in 1999 and traveled the country for 11 years with his wife as full-time RVers. They visited family and friends across the country but came to know and love the desert Southwest. He loved hiking in the desert, visiting old mining towns such as Bisbee and Superior and sites such as Canyon de Chelly and the Apache Trail. He was an amateur rock hound and avid bicyclist, riding miles on the desert roads. He also completed the famous bike ride across Iowa (RAGBRAI), 7 times, the last when he was 75. He was devoted to his family and was hardworking, industrious man willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years Margaret, daughters Vicki (Richard) Simpson, Lori (Randy) Reed, Peggie (Brian) Fishel, and son Bill (Debra) McDermott; sister: Kathy McDermott; brothers: Bob and Joe McDermott; 9 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
