LAKE CITY – Donald Schrad, 81, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City. Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn. Celebrant will be Father Lynn Bruch and burial in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Auburn with military honors provided by the Auburn American Legion Post #284. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday with a scripture prayer service at 5 p.m. at Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City.
Donald Henry Schrad was born on August 25, 1931 in Lake City, Iowa to A. Louis and Anna (Meyer) Schrad. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1949 then served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 during which time he was stationed in Germany for 18 months during the Korean War. On January 3, 1975 Don married Kathryn Smith in Jefferson, IA. He worked as a farmer and at the FC Coop for 20 years. Don was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn and the Auburn American Legion.
Don is survived by his wife Kathryn Schrad of Lake City, step-son Glenn (Meredith) Smith of Urbandale, 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Ralph Winker of Carroll, sisters-in-law DonitaSchrad of Lake City and Ruth Schrad of Auburn, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-daughter GaylaKlimesh, brothers Lloyd and ArloSchrad, and sisters Hilda Winker and Evelyn Schrad.
