Court declines to review Nelson case again

The Iowa Supreme Court has declined to take yet another look at the case of a Fort Dodge dental assistant who was fired on the grounds that the dentist who hired her believed her continued employment was a threat to his marriage.

Chief Justice Mark Cady, of Fort Dodge, signed an order on July 19 denying a second reconsideration of the case of Melissa Nelson.

The Supreme Court ruled in December that Nelson’s dismissal by Dr. James Knight was legal. Then, in a rare move, the justices agreed to reconsider the case this year. In a ruling released earlier this month, the justices upheld their previous decision.

Nelson had filed a lawsuit claiming she was the victim of sexual discrimination. The justices ruled that the facts of the case didn’t support that claim.
