Irene Gwendolyn Bethene Pederson, the daughter of Elmer and Bertha (Kinseth) Pederson, was born June 26, 1919 on the family farm east of Bode. She attended school at Bode and graduated valedictorian from Bode High School at the age of 16. Following her graduation, Irene attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. While at AIB, she played on a traveling basketball team and had the opportunity to play an exhibition game against the Harlem Globetrotters. Even though they lost, the night was made memorable when her mother served dinner to both teams after the game.

Irene met the love of her life, Royal Hansen, at the county fair and on December 23, 1937, they were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. The couple made their home at Humboldt where their daughter Rollene was born. They then moved to Wichita where daughter, Janell was born before moving on to California in search of World War II Job opportunities. While in California, their third daughter, Melody was born and Irene was employed in a cannery and served in the VAC (Volunteer Army Canteen Service). Following the war, the family returned to Humboldt where they farmed for 5 years before moving to their farm near Bode. Irene was a faithful employee of the Bode Bank for 30 years, a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and enjoyed the 18 winters she and Royal spent in Arizona.

Mrs. Hansen is survived by her daughters, Janell (Gary) Embretson of Farmington, MN, and Melody (Don) Wagner of Bode; 8 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 66 years, Royal; daughter, Rollene Gibbs; sisters, Colene and Betty; and brothers, Lobby and George.
