Gaels start tourney trek

The sixth-ranked (Class 2A) St. Edmond softball will begin the road to state this evening at Rogers Park.

The Gaels (23-8 overall) will face Ogden – a 16-4 winner over Prairie Valley Tuesday night – in a 2A, Region 7 quarterfinal.

First-pitch is set for 7 p.m.

St. Edmond is led at the plate by senior Allie Oberg and eighth-grader catcher Maggie Harvey, who are both hitting over .500 on the season.

Senior Katie Donnelly has logged the majority of the innings inside the circle, striking out over 120 batters this year.

The Bulldogs (14-11) will likely pitch Jordan Poock, a junior who has a four-plus earned run average and 87 strikeouts on the year.

Ashlee Ellsworth and eighth-grader Kamie Wheelock lead the Ogden offense, as both are hitting over .400. They have won six of their last seven games overall.

The winner moves on to face either Carroll Kuemper (14-21) or Van Meter (23-11) back at Rogers Park Friday night. The regional final is set for Monday at Ogden.

St. Edmond last qualified for state in 2010, placing third overall after falling in the semifinals.
