Gaels sweep Garrigan

ALGONA – The St. Edmond baseball team flashed its potential with a doubleheader sweep of Bishop Garrigan on Tuesday night.

Following a 5-0 shutout in the opener, the Gaels (12-12 overall, 7-7 NCC) cruised to a 9-2 victory in the second game.

“It was great to get two wins against Garrigan,” said SEHS head coach Joe Shanks. “We got on base and guys pushed guys around. Our kids are getting confidence they can finish.”

Tommy Setterdahl collected two singles and a RBI in the first contest, while Cal Coleman had a two-run double.

Freshman Robert Flattery went the distance on the mound, allowing just one hit with three walks and three strikeouts.

“Robert commanded the strike zone and changed speeds,” Shanks said. “It was also nice to see our kids bear down and put the ball in play hard.”

In the nightcap, Hank Crimmins tallied four hits, including two doubles and four RBI. Flattery, Matthew Bocken and Jason Setterdahl all recorded a pair of hits. Flattery also drove in a run.

Jason Setterdahl, another freshman, earned the complete game win, surrendering six hits. He walked three with four strikeouts.

Adam Hamilton managed a double for Garrigan’s lone hit in Game 1. Zach Boelter notched a pair of hits in the finale, while John Burns chipped in a single.

St. Edmond hosts Algona for Senior Night this evening. The defending Class 1A state semifinalist Golden Bears (20-11, 9-5) also return to action at Humboldt.
