Names of fireworks donors revealed
The names of the donors who will fund Fort Dodge’s fireworks this year have been revealed.
Kevin and Karen Alstott, owners of C&S Products of Fort Dodge, were identified in a press release from the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance Monday afternoon.
According to the release, the Alstotts contacted the Alliance about making a donation after reading reports Saturday that the fireworks display was to be canceled.
“Kevin and I thought it was important that Fort Dodge have a fireworks show for the holiday. We need to remember what the fourth of July is about,” Karen Alstott said.
The Messenger reported on Saturday that the $13,000 to $14,000 needed to put on a show could not be raised this year.
On Sunday, Fort Dodge Mayor Matt Bemrich told The Messenger that an anonymous donor came forward with the requisite funds.
After they found out about the donation, city officials was busy organizing the fireworks and equipment and coordinating police and barricades for the event, fire safety and public works, according to Bemrich.
Fireworks will be provided by J&M Displays of Yarmouth.
“City staff did a great job coordinating what was needed on a Saturday afternoon,” said Bemrich in the Monday press release. “Joe Gilbert was fantastic to get a commitment from J&M Displays to do a topnotch show on a short notice.”
Gilbert, a Fort Dodge business owner, has led fundraising efforts for the city’s fireworks displays since 2006.
The show will begin at dusk on Wednesday. The fireworks will be shot off from near the Des Moines River and visible from downtown.
