Gaels beat Humboldt late

HUMBOLDT – Overcoming shaky defensive play, the sixth-ranked (Class 2A) St. Edmond softball team pulled out a 3-2 victory over Humboldt Monday night.

Maggie Harvey went 3-for-4 offensively for the Gaels (21-8 overall, 13-2 North Central Conference), who swept the season-series from the Wildcats despite committing six errors.

Brigid Hanley, who recorded two doubles, scored the go-ahead run for SEHS in the seventh inning on a dropped fly ball by Humboldt’s left fielder. Hanley had doubled to lead off the seventh in a 2-2 contest.

“It was a game that were were fortunate to come away with a win,” said Gael head coach Paul Hunt. “Humboldt’s a really solid offensive team that’s aggressive on the basepaths and puts the ball in play.”

Senior Katie Donnelly went the distance in the win, allowing three hits and no earned runs. Donnelly walked none and fanned two.

“(Monday) was the best Katie’s thrown in a while,” Hunt said. “She was really hitting her spots. We didn’t play very well behind her defensively, so it was nice to see us pull through for her.”

Courtney Benjamin, Sam Kirby and Sarah Peters each collected singles for Humboldt (16-9, 8-6).

St. Edmond hosts Algona this evening at Rogers Park. First varsity pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Wildcats also return to action in a non-NCC contest at Emmetsburg.
