Backs horse meat use

To the editor:

I am writing in response to a letter written against horse slaughter last weekend. We live in a free country but both conservatives and liberals shackle ourselves every day with closed-mindedness (part of being human) and that was a case of it.

Horse meat can easily be made safe to eat for the consumer, just like any other meat, by rules and regulations that come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration. That’s their job to make our products safe, let them do the same job with horse meat.

The rest of my letter will be just a few points on why we should allow horse processing, and nothing else about the content of her letter.

For one, it is far healthier than beef or pork. In a country where we are obviously eating ourselves to death, shouldn’t we be open arms to healthy options of leaner meat?

All other cultures in the world consume horse meat, Muslims and Americans are the only ones who reject it. In a country that touts being multicultural, why would we reject other cultures choices of food? To me that seems a little un-American.

We always discuss in the public arena how we are going to feed our fast growing population, shouldn’t we be viewing all healthy food options to meet this need? There are tons of starving people in the world and we have tons of unwanted horses, couldn’t we at least do a charitable act and provide this meat to them at a discounted price. We would start to solve two problems by doing that and we would be making new jobs in the process.

Those are just a few small points, to wrap this up I would like to remind people that horses are livestock, not domesticated pets. If you think otherwise then look at the USDA website and it is listed as such, also the nutritional facts are there that back up how healthy it is. You can’t sleep with your horse so I wish people would quit comparing horses to dogs or cats. It’s not even close to being the same.

I am a farmer who takes pride in having a small part in feeding the world, let’s allow the free market to determine if horses could play a part in it to and put our elitist mentality aside on this issue.
